Summertime and its connection to active shooters

Updated: Oct 10, 2023

Sweat in heat

Summertime: a time for backyard barbeques, swimming pools, and gun violence. The Gun Violence Archive reported that 278 mass shootings occurred over the span between June and September of 2022.

Similarly, the Gun Violence Archive’s database shows that this summer’s months have already contributed about a quarter of the 378 mass shootings that have occurred in the United States in 2023.

Why does the heat of the summer lead to increased violence? It’s not just active shooter violence—when the Bureau of Justice Statistics looked at seasonal patterns and criminal trends, they found violent crimes such as murder, rape and aggravated assault, were more likely to happen during the summer season than any other. Biology may be at play here—hot weather increases body temperature, which then results in an increased heart rate and blood pressure. These changes in the body can cause discomfort and agitation, which can lead to shorter fuses and increased anger and violence.
